November 2002
Greetings from the hot country of Haiti. I understand things are getting
cooler in the north but that effect has yet to reach us.
I was hoping to hold off on giving you an update on the work until I had a
number of positive things to say but I figure my time has run out. So you’ll
just have to take the disappointing with the good.
On the good side of the table is the fact that since our return from the
States the transition back to school for Jodie, Jacquie, and Jessica has gone
well. Jacquie is in her senior year and has committed to spending her first
year of college at Anderson next year. She is the editor of the school yearbook
and is also taking a number of advanced placement classes. We just haven’t
found a bedtime for her though since her studies often keep her up late.
Jessica is taking 5th grade by storm. She’s playing Mary in the
Christmas play and is excited about the prospect of being the star. Jodie has a
great class this year, the kind where one of the kids will break into a song and
all the others will join in without prompting. How could it get any better?
The clinics are still doing well. The numbers are too many to handle at
times and I have to send them off in search of other clinics. In general though
that part of life is, although tiring, very satisfying.
The down side I’ll just present to you in the form of prayer requests as I
would appreciate your prayer support in these items.
1.
We have found ourselves in a
bind concerning cars. The clinic car has been down since June. It had its
diesel fuel pump sent to the States for repair 2 times at a cost of $850 and
still didn’t work so we took it to a local garage who also found the engine
needed to be rebuilt. We expect the price for that to be more then $1500. This
lack of a clinic car meant that I have had to use the car that Jodie has been
using for school also for the clinics. This has cause a lot of wear on that car
and it will be needing lots of repair when we can get it off the road. Hoping
to alleviate some of the vehicle pressure I have just purchased a very used
vehicle from Hertz for $7000 which I put on our credit card. Those who would
say that I should go ahead and buy a new car please realize that a new car that
is heavy duty enough to withstand the constant roads where the clinics are would
cost more then $42,000 which is out of our league just now.
2.
Jodie and I have decided to drop
our health insurance due to its exorbitant cost ($688/month), it’s little
coverage payout, and the pressures that those costs are having on us. This was
a very difficult decision that we have prayed about and believe this the way we
should go. We will be starting a saving account to help with some of the health
problems but ask your prayers in that matter also.
Please accept our most sincere thanks for all you do for us. Without
friends like you and the blessings of our loving Father our ministry would be
impossible to continue.
Because of Christ,
John, Jodie, Jacquie, and Jessica Ackerman
